The hidden remains in the island’s interior

An ancient 12th century fortress was the place from which Krk’s noble Frankopan family originated and started by conquering this important place of Croatian history.

When sightseeing, you will notice that an entrance (door) through the walls did not exist, but instead there was a special wooden structure over the wall  which was used as the entrance. Should there have been any immediate danger to the structure, then it could be easily destroyed, preventing entry of unwanted and uninvited guests.  The remains of St. Nicholas’ church, built (according to documents) in 1325 stand by the fortress. The church was used until Ivan the VII left Gradec, and was later restored as the church of the Holy Spirit.
