The walls of Krk

The walls of Krk

In the town of Krk

The walls of Krk are preserved almost entirely, and their oldest parts date back to the distant past. According to archaeological excavations it is assumed that they date back to the 3rd century BC.  These parts are dry-stone built megalithic blocks that precede the Roman style of construction. An inscription from the 1st century BC, which mentions the restoration of the walls of the prehistoric town of Krk, which at that time was called Curicta, also testifies to the age of the walls. The layering of the wall’s construction can be seen in the Perossi House (Volsonis cafe). Today's walls were mainly built in the 14th and 15th centuries. From the towers, which existed within the walls in ancient times, we can also see those from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. An integral part of the walls is the Frankopan castle, built in several stages from the 12th to the 18th century.
