The Roman mosaic

The Roman mosaic

The town of Krk had two ancient thermae. One where the foundations of the cathedral were built, and the other found during the adaptation of the ground floor of the house where the "Mate" café is located, in Ribarska Street, which connects the small town gate and Vela placa. At the time, the thermal baths were next to the main street, which today, thanks to the later building of houses, turns towards Vela placa, while in the antique period it led straight to the forum. The mosaic is well preserved and depicts a marine mythological scene. At the centre is Triton around whom we can see dolphins and other sea creatures dancing. It was created in the 1st century, at the same time as the thermae located under the cathedral. Late antiquity brought some modifications to the original thermal baths, and in the 4th century a new building was erected in the same place.
