Close to Baška

When it comes to culture, this part of the island of Krk became famous due to the village of Jurandvor where a significant monument of Croatian literacy was discovered. A 199 cm long and 99 cm high stone tablet inscribed with text in Glagolitic script in 13 rows was discovered by Jurandvor seminarian, Petar Dorčić in 1851 on the land of the former Benedictine church of St. Lucy. This is one of the oldest records in the Croatian (old Croatian) language that made this small village in Krk famous, turning it into an icon of Croatian culture and literacy. The text represents the testimony of a gift given to the Benedictine monastery by the Croatian king Zvonimir (1075 - 1089). The Baška tablet was carved around 1100.
